As well as having a highly successful opera career, Camilla Tilling has made a name for herself in concert and in recital. Her previous recording for BIS the Strauss recital Rote Rosen (BIS-SACD-1709) was met with great critical acclaim.

ReviewIt's three years since the Swedish soprano released her debut solo album - a gorgeous selection of Richard Strauss songs - but this follow-up has certainly been worth the wait. Best known, perhaps, as an opera singer - and particularly prized for her entrancing Mozart heroines - Tilling is typical of her background and training, a brilliant all-rounder, and her Schubert is no less compelling than her Mozart and Strauss. She focuses almost entirely on masterpieces, with Schubert s first great Lied, Gretchen am Spinnrade, written when he was still in his teens, as the album's centrepiece. Here, as Gretchen, pregnant and now abandoned by Faust, she finds dramatic colours in her lyric voice, suggesting loss of innocence and sexual awakening the mixture of rapture and terror on the words Ach, sein Kuss! ( Ah, his kiss! ) are vividly evoked here. Above all, Tilling is versatile and protean: a teasing charmer in Sylvia (Shakespeare translated); a breathlessly enamoured young girl in the title track (With You Alone), a philosopher in Suleika I and II (poems by Goethe s West-Eastern Divan muse, Marianne von Willemer), and a visionary in the Litany, On All Souls Day. Her soprano sounds peachier than ever, her diction is clear and her musical instincts are immaculate. This lovely singing is underpinned by Paul Rivinius s outstanding playing of the equally important piano parts.
